Papakeechie Protective Association Residents and Stakeholders;
On Thursday, May 22nd, Aquatic Control, Inc. will be performing an application of EPA approved Aquastrike aquatic herbicide (EPA registration number 70506-302), containing 28.6% Dipotassium salt of endothall and 10.6% Diquat dibromide as the active ingredients, for control of Curly leaf pondweed on Lake Papakeechie (figure 1). The herbicide will be only be applied directly to areas with Curly leaf pondweed growth. This herbicide will be applied at a rate of 1ppm (parts per million) in the specific designated areas in the lake and will be applied directly to areas of Curly leaf pondweed. Aquastrike is a contact herbicide, meaning it will only control those plants that are able to absorb the herbicide. Diquat, one of the active ingredient in Aquastrike, sorbs quickly to organic matter in the water and dissipates
rapidly from the water column in a few days to 1 week. Because of this application strategy and the properties of the herbicide, residents must not use the lake as a drinking water supply for 3 days or use for livestock watering for 1 day following treatment. Residents must also refrain from irrigating turf and lawns for 3 days and from irrigating ornamental landscape plantings and food crops for 5 days following treatment. There will be no water use restrictions regarding fishing or swimming (the lake may be used immediately following treatment for these activities). These restrictions only apply for treated areas of the lake, not all residents. There will be a yellow plastic sign in the yards of the affected residents before treatment.
If you have additional questions please contact Aquatic Control at 219-476-7663 and dial
extension 3204 to reach the Northern Lakes Biologist, Malena Ryan.
Message from the President
Hello Papakeechieans,
It’s already 2025, how quickly time passes! It seems like yesterday I was a young boy camping on the islands, playing army with friends, and enjoying my surroundings.! Here’s a little background information on myself and, why I ran for president. We moved here from Norwalk, Ohio (Go Buckeyes) in early 1985, my parents found a beautiful rental log cabin all the way at the end of a secluded gravel road, otherwise known as Promontory Point. It was perfect, surrounded by the outdoors and the water on three sides. We lived there till 1990, when we moved across the lake to a house with a little bit more room and it is where my parents still reside. I packed all my important belonging (camping/army gear) into the PBR boat and rowed it to our new house, in two trips to be exact!! It was great because I didn’t lose any friends from the move but gained several more from my new neighborhood. The best memories were sledding on the lot next door, the huge ice-skating parties and all the time swimming or fishing on Papakeechie. Those great things made me never want to leave and I haven’t. I have lived on Papakeechie for 40 years. I am a graduate of Wawasee High School. My wife, Candace, and I have three amazing sons. I own and operate Wallace Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, my wife works at Tri-County Fish & Wildlife Area, and two of our boys attend school at Wawasee Community Schools (Go Warriors). I ran for president of the lake association because of the life I have lived here and the opportunity to invest in the life my boys will have on this lake in the future. Papakeechie is a wonderful place to grow up and raise a family and I hope you will get the chance to do the same. I take pride in being a lifelong resident here and will continue to do my best at representing this lake as one body! Many of you know me already and if you
don’t, please feel free to reach-out. If you have questions, I am always around. Thank you for making me your president. I look forward to seeing you around our beautiful lake!
Sincerely, Shane Wallace
President PPA
